Why I’m becoming a MoFo(er).
There’s something I’ve been bursting to tell people for the last few weeks. It’s something that will come as no surprise to some and a bit of a shock to others.
I’m joining the Mozilla Foundation.
I can’t tell you how excited I am! As ‘Badges and Skills Lead’ I’ll be both continuing the work started by Michelle Levesque on web literacies and evangelising Open Badges.
The last couple of years with JISC infoNet have been fantastic but I had to take such a wonderful opportunity! I’m fortunate to be both leaving and joining an extremely friendly, effective and forward-thinking team.
If you have any questions I’ll do my best to answer them in the comments below!
Awesome. Congratulations!Ā
Thanks Karen! š
Doug, this is great! I can’t wait to see how your edu background helps to shape this initiative. Please let me know how I can help!
Thanks John – it’s all about the community, so I’ll very much be borrowing everyone’s brains! š
Congratulations. Very exciting stuff!
Thanks Oliver! š
Awesome! A perfect fit š
Well done. Let’s hope your work leads to a re-assessment of our out dated qualifications infrastructure.
Thanks Martin! š
Thanks John – I think we’re aiming for augmentation (first!) š
Congrats. Ā A long commute ? (now the kicker) Ā I note the badges you display and observe that they are a bit dull. Ā My students regard badges as a fashion item with a cycle of use. Ā The same could not be said of the certificate competition which gather dust and get lost at the most inconvenient time. Ā The shiny add-ons do not impress me either; I have always felt that a picture of the teacher would be better – with the added benefit, in my case of discouraging wall hanging of such documents.
Thanks Paul. The badges are as dull as you make them! š
Worse than dull badges are apologetic graduation ceremonies. Ā Can you believe in Aberdeen Uni its all done in Latin and worse in Edinburgh the academics spout ad nauseam with the only redemption being a star turn by Michael Palin, Sadly the 2nd time we went, to a postgrad event, there was no circus rep nor free teas
AWWWWWWWWYEAHHHH! #thatisall š
superb news and look forward to working with you – well done !
Welcome aboard!
I’m so pleased for you & me Doug! I’ve chatted to Sunny Lee about sorting out some Open badges for 100 Word Challenge so I will definitely be getting in touch. Could you point meĀ inĀ the direction of someone who could help with the design?Ā
Julia Skinner
Thanks Julia! Do you mean the design of the badges?
Congratulations Doug – look forward to seeing how you help shale the future of badges et al – will be in touch š
Or even shape š
Ā Thanks Dan! Look forward to working with you in future. š
Yes but I’m still at theĀ earlyĀ stages of understanding so support with the whole concept would be great!
Cool, look forward to having a conversation soon. š
So how about a 1 minute manifesto “Why Badges”?
Great idea! š
Brilliant to hear your news Doug and what a company to work for. The Open Badges movement now has a very strong voice.
Thanks Kevin! š
Congratulations, Doug. Ā Very excited to see how you can impact their work in education. Ā Particularly interested how you can reshape the computing/ICT curriculum through the use of badges. Ā Best wishes.
Ermmm, you want to reconsider the title of the post. Mofo in street language means something quite different…Ā

Late to the party, but just wanted to add my voice to theĀ cacophonyĀ of congratulations above. Looking forward to reading about the next phase! Good luck matey š
Thanks Dave! š
Even later here Doug, Congrats, an interesting development in your career. sounds like an exciting gig. You might be interested in the glew project, glew.org.uk that has a roadmap that includes badges. Very ambitious project.
Hi John, and thanks! I’d seen Glew (briefly!) and have talked to Joe Wilson about it, but didn’t realise badges was on the roadmap. š
Congrats! You definitely fall in the catergory of leaders I described in my latest blog post “Why Facebook is Not Apple” Would love for you to check it out.Ā http://bit.ly/Mu0bt9Ā
Just caught up on your news! Well done! OB
Thanks Ollie! š
Great news and the best of luck with it. Just got my first few badges myself only last week when trying out the P2PU and think it’s a great idea. Coder Dojo, here in Ireland also looking into using them, from what I hear – one of many I guess.
Thanks! Good to hear Coder Dojo is looking to use badges. š
Good stuff. Congratulations.
Thanks Stephen! š
Ah ha! So that’s why I’ve had to pick up one of your ‘gigs’! Congratulations!!
Yep, sorry about that Lils! š
Congratulations – Sounds like a fantastic opportunity! Stay in touch and thanks for all your help & support. M.
Thanks Mark! š
