This week I’ve been:

Meeting up and geocaching with James Langley while talking Open Badges. He was up near where I live in Northumberland preparing for an activity day. 🙂
Wondering why I’d send my children to secondary school.
Booking travel. Lots of travel.
Celebrating my first year at Mozilla.
Hosting the weekly Web Literacy Standard community call. You can listen again here.
Communicating with various people and organizations via Skype/phone/email about integrating with the Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI) – including Codecademy.
Releasing v0.7 of my iterative ebook: The Essential Elements of Digital Literacies
Talking with Laura Hilliger about the link between hacktivity kits and the Web Literacy Standard.
Mapping the UK Open Badges people/organizations/projects I’ve spoken to who are ready to issue badges.
Planning a potential Game On-style challenge or competition for aligning with the Web Literacy Standard with Chloe Varelidi. She also pointed me towards MDN’s Dev Derby.
Talking to the Comms team about what we need to do in the run up to the beta launch of the Web Literacy Standard on July 26th.
Running an Open Badges workshop at the University of Hull.
Visiting the Google London office to visit my very talented friend Paul Lewis.
Hosted the (very successful) Badge the UK launch at the Mozilla London office. It should soon be on Air Mozilla as it was livestreamed and recorded!
Trying to take the holiday day everyone at Mozilla was given on Friday (but actually doing my expenses and travelling to Glasgow instead)
Running an Open Badges workshop for CoderDojo Scotland at Glasgow Science Centre.

Next week I was going to be in Berlin to run an Open Badges workshop with Tim Riches, but now I’m just going to be in London on Sunday night/Monday for ePIC conference (where I’ll be running three workshops). I also need to get planned a Maker Party event at the Centre for Life that I’ve booked for August 17th.

This week I’ve been:

Helping kids hack their school websites at Maker Faire (using X-Ray Goggles) with my Mozilla / Make Things Do Stuff colleagues.
Hosting the weekly Web Literacy standard call.
Talking to people via Skype and in person about integrating with the Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI). I had my closest meeting yet – just 5 miles away! Also, excitingly, it looks like CoderDojo might be badgifying their belts!
Starting planning an Open Badges workshop focusing on assessment at the Mozilla London office in June. I then had to postpone/cancel it as I’ve been invited to an EU summit on the same date.
Sharing the first draft of Mozilla’s Web Literacy standard with the Webmaker community on the weekly call.
Participating in the first week of the Mozilla #teachtheweb MOOC.
Talking with Vinay Gupta about an idea about a ‘Firecloud’ evolution of the Firefox web browser that we’re considering submitting to the Mozilla Labs Hatchery.
Setting a date in July for an Open Badges workshop at the University of Hull.
Helping judge a Technology Strategy Board funding round including some work around Open Badges.
Presenting and answering questions at an Open Badges briefing session for Leicester schools, organised by Josie Fraser. My slides are here.

Next week it’s Bank Holiday (woo!) then I’m in London on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning for a meeting with Lord Jim Knight. Then on Friday I’m in Salford to talk to the BBC about Open Badges for their CPD programme(s).

Weeknote 06/2013

This week I have been mostly:

Reading Mindstorms by Seymour Papert.
Planning a SXSWedu panel session with Kate Stokes from Nesta.
Writing lots of blog posts explaining Mozilla’s (or at least my) thinking around a new, open learning standard for Web Literacy. See this overview post pulling everything together.
Preparing for and presenting as part of the kick-off online gathering for the Web Literacy standard. related resources are here.
Leading a Vital TeachShare session on Mozilla Webmaker tools. Slides here and the recording (which I’m hoping to have converted into a more Web-friendly format) can be found here.
Talking to the University of Hull about Open Badges for skills awards. I’m also in conversations with another university about a badge-based BSc, which is exciting. And the BBC. Badges, badges everywhere!
Submitting an IGNITE proposal for the DML Conference 2013 around the Web Literacy standard work. I did one last year (on a different topic) so I’m not sure if that counts for or against me.

Next week I’m a guest of the University of Salford who are interested in exploring Open Badges for various things. And, apart from eating pancakes on Tuesday and being extra-nice to my wife on Thursday, I’m looking forward to catching up with longer-term projects like learning JavaScript. 🙂
