Web Literacy: More than just coding; an enabling education for our times [EdTech Digest]

Web Literacy | edtechdigest.com 2014-09-08 14-03-43

Last week, my colleague Lainie Decoursy got in touch wondering if I could write a piece about web literacy. It was a pretty tight turnaround, but given pretty much all I think about during my working hours is web literacy, it wasn’t too much of a big ask!

The result is a piece in EdTech Digest entitled Web Literacy: More than just coding; an enabling education for our times. It’s an overview of Mozilla’s work around Webmaker and, although most of the words are mine, I have to credit my colleagues for some useful edits.

Weeknote 36/2014

This week I’ve been:

  • Interviewing people. A lot. I’m starting the ball rolling towards a v2.0 update of the Web Literacy Map (which looks prettier here in the Webmaker resources section). To do this, I’m recording the conversations and posting the audio together with a summary on this blog. Below is a list of the 15 people I’ve talked to this week, together with links to the recordings – where I’ve had time to process them. You can find the repository on archive.org.

Next week I’ll be mostly at home, interviewing people and working on an video introduction to Mozilla’s badge for the iDEA award. On Friday I’m up in Stirling, at the invitation of Ben Williamson, to speak at a seminar.

POSTPONED: Mozilla Maker Party Newcastle 2014

We’ve made the decision today to postpone the Maker Party planned for Saturday 13th September at Campus North, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Although there were lots of people interested in the event, the timing proved problematic for potential mentors and attendees alike. We’re going to huddle next week and think about a more suitable time – perhaps in November.

Thanks to those who got in touch about the event and offered their support. 🙂
