Weeknotes 08/2015 and 09/2015

Last week I was in Dubai on holiday with my family thanks to the generosity of my Dad. Here’s a couple of photos from that trip. Scroll down for this week’s updates!

This (four-day) work week I’ve been:

Mozilla

Catching up with emails and notes from team meetings.
Creating questionnaires for the new Web Literacy Basics I modules.
Moving GitHub tickets relating to the Webmaker Curriculum to a new repository.
Putting together agenda and updating spreadsheet for this week’s Web Literacy Map community call.
Reviewing Stacy Martin’s What’s Wrong With Your Password? teaching kit.
Adding my thoughts to the design process for the upcoming Web Literacy page on teach.webmaker.org.
Responding to Dave Crusoe’s post about the importance of webmaking in the #TeachTheWeb discussion forum.
Editing the audio and writing an overview of this weeks’ Web Literacy Map community call.
Filing GitHub issues (and a meta issue) for all of the Web Literacy Map v1.5 competencies. This is so we can work asynchronously on the skills underpinning those competencies.
Travelling to London for a meeting with Michelle. This turned into a five-hour ordeal after some of the tracks broke in front of the train. Thankfully, I’d already made the decision to stay over until Saturday!
Writing:
- The final push for Web Literacy Map v1.5 (and how you can get involved!)

Dynamic Skillset

Discussing potential involvement in a Future Classrooms event in Armagh later this month.
Confirming my keynote and workshop for London College of Fashion‘s annual conference at the end of March.

Other

Planning my next articles for Educating Modern Learners and DMLcentral.
Curating photos from our Dubai trip, which I’ll make into an iPhoto book (as we do for all of our family holidays!)
Writing:
Attending the London Festival of Education on Saturday. It was great to catch up with Dai Barnes, Tim Riches, Jim Knight, and Oliver Quinlan. It was also great to meet Matt Rogers and surprise Tom Bennett. Other than that I went to a session featuring George The Poet, one on mindfulness in education, and DigitalMe‘s workshop on Open Badges.

Next week I’ll be at home working more on the Learning Pathways whitepaper and Web Literacy Map v1.5. I’ll also be helping out with the Clubs curriculum work where necessary.

Weeknote 07/2015

This week I’ve been:

Mozilla

Collaborating with community members to nail down the learning objectives for the next Webmaker curriculum activity around Open Practices.
Running a Webmaker Club with Chris Wilde. It was an awkward time to run it (after school, last week before half-term) but a few came along. We did the Kraken the Code activity and a bit of remixing with the X-Ray Goggles.
Building-out more of the Wikipedia page for Web Literacy, which I started last week. We’re co-ordinating efforts in this GitHub issue.
Writing blog posts:
Drafting a new section of the upcoming Learning Pathways whitepaper. I’ve also been responding to helpful comments by colleagues.
Creating questionnaires for the Open Practices activity to be filled in before and after the sessions by learners and mentors.
Re-reading and making notes on the Pathways working doc that Chloe Varelidi, Lucas Blair, and Grainne Hamilton put together last year for the Mozilla Discover project.
Filing issues, commenting on them, and organising them in various GitHub repositories.
Sorting out my travel and accommodation for FutureFest.
Testing Eisenhower, a prototype productivity tool started by William Duyck (aka FuzzyFox) during his gap year on our team at Mozilla, and continued during his final year at university. He’s looking for feedback.
Creating an epic spreadsheet of all of the skills for the upcoming Web Literacy Map v1.5.
Hosting this week’s Web Literacy Map community call.
Meeting with representatives of a couple of organisations around partnerships.

Dynamic Skillset

Working on pricing for on-demand, one-off, and ongoing consultancy.
Dealing with enquiries from various people/organisations.

Other

Joining Ian O’Byrne and Bryan Mathers for a video podcast entitled Digitally Literacy 006 – A Picture of Literacy.
Suffering from getting out of routine. I stayed up until just after midnight on Monday night getting something (technical) sorted out for a family member. This had a knock-on effect all week.
Rescoping one of my planned e-books as The Essential Elements of Digital Literacies: worked examples after revisiting some of James Paul Gee‘s work.
Exercising
- Swimming (Monday, Thursday)
- Gym (Wednesday, Friday)
- Walk (Tuesday)

I’m going to be away on holiday from Monday 16th to Monday 23rd (inclusive) with my family in Dubai. I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to that! 🙂

Back to bullet points. This week (which was remarkably similar to the one before), I’ve been:

Mozilla

Reviewing updates, writing, and meeting with colleagues about an upcoming Learning Pathways whitepaper.
Saying goodbye to Kat Braybrooke who’s leaving Mozilla to begin a PhD.
Finalising the learning objectives for the Web Literacy Clubs ‘Remixing’ and ‘Composing for the Web’ activities.
Building out the GitHub repository for the Learning Pathways whitepaper. We’re mainly using it for the issue tracking at the moment.
Thinking through which badges we could issue in Q1 for Clubs.
Preparing for, hosting, and writing up this week’s Web Literacy Map v1.5 community call. We focused on the skills underpinning the newly re-scoped ‘Designing for the Web’, ‘Accessibility’ and ‘Web Mechanics’ competencies.
Meeting with the headteacher and class teacher at my son’s school to arrange running a Web Literacy Club. I had to fill in lots of forms.
Creating pre- and post- session questionnaires (Remixing, Composing for the Web) for learners in Web Literacy Club testing sessions.
Reviewing a draft overview of the Privacy Badges report for Karen.
Tweaking and finishing off Michelle’s work on the two new activities we’re testing with Web Literacy Clubs this week.
Making an overview of how to play HTML Corners as part of one of the Clubs activities.
Talking with Media Smarts about the way their work can inform Mozilla’s (and vice versa!)

- Digital Literacy and Web Literacy on Wikipedia
- Is grunt ‘n’ click getting in the way of web literacy?

Dynamic Skillset

Meeting with Pete Phillips about some potential consultancy with CODEC at Durham University.
Setting up at CRM sooner rather than later. I tried a couple of self-hosted Open Source options, but in the end went with Zoho CRM.
Confirming a booking to keynote and run a workshop at London College of Fashion‘s staff/student conference.

Other

Having lunch with Steve Boneham and Chris Thomson, former colleagues at Jisc (both of whom have new jobs!)
Liaising with the Church of England’s Estates department about getting trees overhanging our property trimmed.
Starting to get ready for our half-term holiday in Dubai!

Next week I’ll be ensuring my colleagues have everything they need before I head off on holiday. I’m also appearing on a Google Hangout on Air with Ian O’Byrne and Bryan Mathers.
