Weeknote 41/2016
This week I’ve been:
- Sending out Issue #232 of Doug Belshaw’s Thought Shrapnel, my weekly newsletter loosely focused on education, technology, and productivity. It featured links on learner identity, productive browsing, and gym mentality. Many thanks to Makers Academy for sponsorship!
- Recording and releasing Episode 64 (‘Meritocracy’) of Today In Digital Education, my weekly podcast with co-host Dai Barnes. This week we discussed why it’s time to let go of ‘meritocracy’ (main topic) as well as Creative Commons superheroes, badge-based cities of learning, alternative to Google Chrome, and my new audiobook. You can join the community to discuss this episode of TIDE in our Slack channel!
- Celebrating my wife’s birthday. For the first time for about 10 years I baked a cake and iced it. Achievement unlocked!
- Backing Bryan Mathers’ Visual Stickery crowdfunder. You should too, particularly if you like laptop stickers!
- Catching up with a few people, including Nate Otto from the Badge Alliance and Sarah Horrocks from London CLC.
- Confirming upcoming digital strategy work with Victoria College in Jersey both before and after Christmas.
- Recording and releasing Chapter 1 of my new audiobook entitled #uppingyourgame: a practical guide to personal productivity (v2)
- Writing for two new publications. I’ll share more details on this once my work has been accepted and published, but it’s meant less time to do non-paid writing, for example on my discours.es blog. There’s always a bit of a ‘dance’ to do when writing to a new brief around expectations, style, etc. I hope to be able to share these posts once published in the next couple of weeks!
- On CC0 (Open Educational Thinkering, 15th October 2016)
- I’ve just released Chapter 1 of my new audiobook on productivity (Open Educational Thinkering, 13th October 2016)
- 5 steps to creating a sustainable digital literacies curriculum (Literaci.es, 12th October 2016)
- FINALLY! A way to create resilient, untakedownable websites accessible in standard web browsers (Discours.es, 11th October 2016)
- Mercedes-Benz ‘solves’ intractable problem in philosophical ethics (Discours.es, 11th October 2016)
- Why It’s Time to Let Go of ‘Meritocracy’ (DML Central, 10th October 2016)
- 3 things we need for the next big frontier in Open Badges and digital credentials (Open Educational Thinkering, 10th October 2016)
Next week I’ll be doing some more writing, preparing for MozFest, running a thinkathon with my We Are Open colleagues, and catching up with various people. Wondering if I can help you / your organisation? Get in touch!
