He is full of good ideas, that man!</li>

Not have these three begun to blog to reflect on their own practice as educators, but are self-hosting their (<a href="http://wordpress.org">WordPress</a>-powered) blogs. <p>I&#8217;m not so sure on the name, but it&#8217;ll do for the time being. What follows comes from a few discussions I&#8217;ve had with <a href="http://edtechroundup.com">EdTechRoundUp</a> folk and a previous post entitled <em><a href="http://dougbelshaw.com/blog/2009/07/23/the-importance-of-heuristics-in-educational-technology-and-elearning/">The importance of heuristics in educational technology and elearning</a></em>. You may want to read the latter to understand what I&#8217;m getting at.</p>
<p>Suffer the poor person new to the wonderful world many of us inhabit. I don&#8217;t think the phrase &#8216;Web 2.0&#8242; quite covers it any more, to be honest. Some have clutched at different titles to set those who inhabit this &#8216;other&#8217; space &#8211; some have talked of the <a href="http://thecleversheep.blogspot.com/2008/02/networked-teacher.html">&#8216;networked teacher&#8217;</a>, the <a href="http://julielindsay.wikispaces.com/A+Day+in+the+Life">&#8216;connected educator&#8217;</a> and so on. I&#8217;m not sure sure we need a formal title, but I think most people will know what I mean when I say there&#8217;s a difference between being a teacher in a classroom with a textbook, and being a teacher connected to literally hundreds of others worldwide through various communications technologies and conventions. <img src='http://dougbelshaw.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p><strong>The trouble is, how do you get into this cocktail party?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>What happens if you <em>don&#8217;t</em> <em>know</em> who to turn to?</li>
<li>What if you <em>haven&#8217;t got</em> a Twitter network to support you yet?</li>
<li>What if you&#8217;ve just found a tool and you&#8217;re wondering if it could be used with students?</li>
<li>What if you can envisage an end product but don&#8217;t know the technological means of getting there?</li>
</ul>
<p>That&#8217;s where this idea of <em>heuristical templates</em> comes in.* If people committed to using a common format to review and discuss tools and applications relating to educational technology and e-learning, then this would have a number of advantages:</p>
<ol>
<li>It would give the newbie a common structure that they could seek out.</li>
<li>If Creative Commons licensed, these could be syndicated in a central place.</li>
<li>It would lead to some cohesion in certain parts of the edublogosphere.</li>
</ol>
<p>An example of someone who blogs extremely well about new tools and approaches is <a href="http://tbarrett.edublogs.org/">Tom Barrett</a>. By the end of reading one of Tom&#8217;s posts you know what the tool can be used for, why you&#8217;d use is, any problems there may be, and other people who have used it before.</p>
<p>To that end, and inspired by Tom, I suggest the following structure taking <a href="http://posterous.com">Posterous</a> as an example.</p>
<p>* Perhaps <em>E-Learning Templates</em> is better? Hmmm&#8230;</p>

<p>Posterous is a blogging solution. A blog is a website that is easy to maintain and which has the most recent content at the top. Posterous sets itself apart from other blogging solutions as it is almost entirely updated by using email. Sending an email to post@posterous.com serves not only to set up the blog but to update it. Posterous deals &#8216;intelligently&#8217; with email attachments &#8211; for example turning MP3s into an embedded media player and Powerpoint presentations into slideshows.</p>
<p><strong>How much does it cost?</strong></p>
<p>Posterous is free for up to 1GB of space. The <a href="http://posterous.com/faq/">FAQ</a> says that in future Premium (paid-for) features will be add-ons to the functionality available for free.</p>

<li>Custom avatars.</li>
<li>Group blogs (by adding more than one email address to a blog)</li>
<li>Custom domain names.</li>
<li>Blogs can be imported from other platforms.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Barriers</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Limited customisation (stuck with white background)</li>
<li>Moderation?</li>
<li>Sidebar not very useful</li>
<li>Ads in future?</li>
</ul>

We&#8217;re far from being an exclusive group and, although we&#8217;re mostly from the UK, some do join us from further afield.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve been on a summer break since the end of last academic year, but we start again tomorrow night, 30 August 2009 at 20.30 BST.</p>

		<title>Safeguarding: the next step in the transition to Web 3.0?</title>

<p>I&#8217;m worried about ownership. I&#8217;m concerned about &#8216;intellectual property&#8217;. There&#8217;s two statements I never thought I&#8217;d make on this blog! Why am I thinking about these two topics? It&#8217;s a result of a combination of three things that have happened recently:</p>
<ul>
<li>The release of <a href="http://wordpress.org">WordPress 2.7</a> that has made my use of the <a href="http://disqus.com">Disqus</a> commenting system on this blog largely redundant. I&#8217;m now wondering why I&#8217;m using it as the comments aren&#8217;t backed up along with my blog posts. What if Disqus goes paid-for or bust? <img src='http://dougbelshaw.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_surprised.gif' alt=':-o' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>
<li><a href="http://dougbelshaw.com/blog/2009/01/17/bett-2009-teachmeet-and-iphone-misfortunes/">TeachMeet09 at BETT</a> was great. But what&#8217;s stopping people taking the name and patenting it, thereby trading off all the great (and free) work educators have done?</li>
<li>Dai Barnes registered <a href="http://edtechroundup.co.uk">edtechroundup.co.uk</a> last week to test out <a href="http://jumpbox.com">Jumpbox</a>. Whilst that&#8217;s great and was fine, what was to stop someone else registering that name and spamming it?</li>
</ul>
<p>So I suppose what I&#8217;m concerned about isn&#8217;t &#8216;ownership&#8217; or &#8216;intellectual property&#8217; at all, it&#8217;s <em>safeguarding</em>. To my mind, that&#8217;s something that&#8217;s got to be sorted out before we move from what has been called <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2.0">Web 2.0</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>The second generation of the World Wide Web, especially the movement away from static webpages to dynamic and shareable content.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>&#8230;to what, for the time being is known as Web 3.0 or the &#8216;semantic web&#8217;:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Web 3.0&#8230; refers to a supposed third generation of Internet-based services that collectively comprise what might be called &#8216;the intelligent Web&#8217;—such as those using semantic web, microformats, natural language search, data mining, machine learning, recommendation agents, and artificial intelligence technologies—which emphasize machine-facilitated understanding of information in order to provide a more productive and intuitive user experience.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>For &#8216;intelligent agents&#8217; and semantic web searches to be possible, there has to be an understanding of the <em>relationship</em> between spaces and identities on the Internet. There is an element of this with the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOAF_(software)">FOAF</a> (&#8216;Friend Of A Friend&#8217;) protocol included in web applications and software such as <a href="http://wordpress.org">WordPress</a>, which powers this blog.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s going to be difficult to weigh-up and balance on the one hand, making sure that brands, identities and ideas aren&#8217;t hijacked, whilst on the other, giving individuals and groups freedom of expression. But without some change in safeguarding, I can&#8217;t see the change happening anytime soon.</p>
<p>Who&#8217;s going to be the guarddog that provides guarantees? Or can it be distributed?</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been contacted by four different postgraduate researchers in the last two weeks. It&#8217;s getting to the stage where I&#8217;m considering setting up a new website/discussion space! A couple of them just wanted permission to use some of my stuff in their theses, one is <a href="http://www.fayesnewliteraciesblog.blogspot.com/">already a member</a> of the Edublogosphere, but one asked a very pertinent question:</p>

</blockquote>
<p>As you can imagine, I hardly knew where to start! As I like to reply to emails ASAP, I replied thus:</p>

<li>Find some blogs to read. My <a href="http://www.google.com/reader/shared/03128953371197858774">Google Reader shared items</a> might be a good place to start. Also try the big names in the edublogosphere &#8211; search for Stephen Downes, Will Richardson, Vicki Davis, Ewan McIntosh, and Dave Warlick. <img src='http://dougbelshaw.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>
<li>Get yourself a Google account and use <a href="http://www.google.com/reader">Google Reader</a> to subscribe to the RSS feeds of blogs (don&#8217;t know how? <a href="http://www.google.com/support/feedburner/bin/answer.py?answer=79408">click here</a>)</li>
<li>Start using <a href="http://www.twitter.com/">Twitter</a>. At first you&#8217;ll think &#8220;What on earth&#8230;?&#8221;. After a while you&#8217;ll find it indispensible.</li>
<li>Start blogging yourself. Doesn&#8217;t matter what, but start making links with people. It&#8217;s the conversation that counts! Try <a href="http://www.edublogs.org/">edublogs</a> to get you started. <img src='http://dougbelshaw.com/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':-D' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>

<p>There&#8217;s a Hebrew proverb that I&#8217;m sure almost every educator will have heard before: <em>&#8220;Do not confine your children to your learning, for they were born in a different time.&#8221;</em> The same could be said of the Edublogosphere. I can hardly recommend that people start by using the same tools I did when things have moved on so much in the last 3-4 years! What would <strong>YOU</strong> recommend?</p>
