9 ideas in search of a blog post.
Last month Seth Godin posted 9 ideas in search of a blog post. Here’s my version:
- Formal education should probably be free up to whatever level you want (and perhaps only compulsory up to age 11).
- 99% Invisible is the podcast that most often makes me see the world in new ways.
- I still haven’t figured out how to balance my photophobia and SAD. Thank goodness for Spring (and f.lux)
- Tools are constraining. This is both good and bad.
- Learning to touch-type at a young age (I think I was about 12) is possibly one of the best things I’ve ever done.
- Things I Learned This Week is back, phoenix-like, as a free weekly newsletter.
- There are no absolutes, only contrasts.
- People tend to be skeptical about non-physically-obvious medical symptoms.
- E-Prime blows my mind (via Simon Bostock)

Hi Doug. I’d like to hear more about E Prime. My students find writing difficult and learning about and doing exercises in applying e prime might help them. Glad to see TILTW is back; a must-read when term gets busy.
Thanks Dai, I enjoy the process behind TILTW but I couldn’t prioritise it until my thesis was finished. I’m glad that I’m resurrecting it, albeit in a slightly different format.
Regarding E-Prime, I’m not so sure it would be the best option for those finding writing difficult. I’d see it more of an extension/challenge thing!
I thought that those who find writing a challenge might benefit from seeing how the intricacies of language can be altered to deliver such a different meaning. Challenging it would be, but possibly inspiring? Rather than the deadening of careful language choices that seems prevalent in some of todays teenagers, e-prime might awaken language. WDYT?
Possibly. I think I’d want to start off with their interests rather than impose something upon them though. Perhaps use as an example of something that interests *you*? Model the excitement of new language discoveries? 🙂

The trouble with free is that a section of the customers take advantage of the offer. The market then distorts and rather than socialism you’re stuck with a situation parodied by such as the daily mail. It would be best if you could come up with a new term or tech to describe free but with responsibility.
