I appreciate the point you make about how important clear policies are for students and teachers. I have linked to your post in my blog entry at http://cjpeterso.edublogs.org/2010/02/20/internet-filtering/

Doug, thank you for this very sensible approach to the AUP. I love this doc and may well use it as the basis for our pupil AUP summary to display as a poster in all public computer areas of our school. [the actual AUP is lengthy and signed as a bit-part of all other school contracts - not most effective way of communicating the message to the actual users and therefore the need for the poster] I was wondering about point 5, specifically the part about fair use rules. Am I missing something? How would pupils know what these are?

Hi Doug. I am a secondary school teacher who will incorporate web2.0 applications in my course. On my to-do list is drafting an AUP.

Nice work on the Acceptable Use Policy. May I adapt this document for my use? My question about these documents, and something I think the students will want clarification about, is how far do these rules extend? Does the agreement pertain only to a student's use of the internet for school purposes, but once they've finished using technology for that they are then free to use it however they like?
I think questions like those, which suggest that one's classroom or school rules might infringe into what students perceive to be their personal freedoms to act and behave as they wish on their own time, will likely come up in the presentation and discussion of this document. Being able to address inquiries like those, where I can see the students losing a desire to buy into the document, will certainly be important in making the policy an effective one.

I like the conciseness of the five key points and think that their principles are certainly all-encompassing. Very useful. Was just wondering for the youngest children (and any of them who maybe aren't that good at reading) whether you'd thought of a symbol version? I've used Symbols a lot in the past, when I was working in Special Education & your AUA's reminded me in some ways of the student contract we symbolised at one point for some Further Education students.
If you've not seen symbolised resources, have a look at http://www.widgit.com/ & also http://www.widgit.com/resources/elive/index.htm where they've got some magazines (designed for older students)

Hi Doug,<br
