Doug,

Having just come across this post during some research, I find this to be a very progressive, intelligent approach to AUPs in education.
I work for a Web Filtering vendor, and am trying to help establish a culture of freedom to use the web inquisitively within education, rather than restrictively. I hope we get the chance to discuss some of your experiences at some point.

Doug, thank you for this very sensible approach to the AUP. I appreciate the point you make about how important clear policies are for students and teachers. I have linked to your post in my blog entry at http://cjpeterso.edublogs.org/2010/02/20/internet-filtering/

Hi Doug. I love this doc and may well use it as the basis for our pupil AUP summary to display as a poster in all public computer areas of our school. [the actual AUP is lengthy and signed as a bit-part of all other school contracts - not most effective way of communicating the message to the actual users and therefore the need for the poster] I was wondering about point 5, specifically the part about fair use rules. Am I missing something? How would pupils know what these are?

Nice work on the Acceptable Use Policy. May I adapt this document for my use? I am a secondary school teacher who will incorporate web2.0 applications in my course. On my to-do list is drafting an AUP.

I think this is a really good way to tackle this issue. Don't you think the bit about Copyright should come under Respect Others?
Thanks for sharing this with us

Does this mean that your students will have access to social networking sites and email such as hotmail/gmail? On my schools network, I can't get on anything remotely 'social'!
