Unfortunately for me, and for this design, Jamie vetoed it. The white space is pretty deeply offensive to him, and when scaled up he finds the spider frightening (I can see that…the eyes get really scary when he’s big). That said, Haetro is among the best designers in this contest, and I hate that none of his entries will make it to the final round. So, an interesting lesson to learn from this is that perhaps some of the most compelling images can www.chase.com also be the most off-putting. I asked around about this one, and it’s a very polarizing logo, you either love it or hate it.

Awesome execution on the idea of a spider built from the letters W and M. This is a gorgeous illustration. I wasn’t so sure about highendprofile’s skills based on his first entry, which was a nice idea but not very well executed, but this spider immediately blew me away. Beautiful execution and the spider is among the best illustrations in the contest. I don’t love the font on this one–it’s a bit tall and thin, but the colors are nice, www.chase.com and the spider is what draws the eye, so even with a not quite right font, I really like this logo. This is another of the spider-based logos that has gotten the axe by Jamie. In this case, the cuteness that I love is a turnoff for Jamie. It won’t, unfortunately, make it into the final round, but highendprofile is a great designer, and I wish we had another idea or two from him in the contest.

Thanks for the prompt! I love sharing these quotations with others; it really sheds a light on oneself.

No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of others.
Charles Dickens
(This is the poster I put on the BACK wall of my classroom, to remind me why I went into teaching in the first place.)

Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope and, crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring; those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
Robert F. Kennedy
(This quotation reiterates my reasons for entering education as a career as well. It's why teaching social responsibility is so important.)

Be kind; everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.
John Watson
(This one is on my desk; it reminds me to consider others' situations, both colleagues, students, and parents, when I'm feeling not-so-terrific about them.)

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.
Henry David Thoreau
(This one reminds me to allow those "square pegs," as many call them, in my classroom to flourish in their own way.)

It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not deserve them.
Mark Twain
(For those times when someone else takes the applause that you know you should have been recognized for.)

I like the rabbit quote - my aim will be to keep the Faculty improvement plan down to a few targets, mainly to get ACfE up and running and to ensure ICT is fully embedded in all our teaching - and most importantly to spread the load, something I felt I began to achieve next year. Will need to think about a suitable quote.
