Why schools should exclusively use free software

Welcome back!
Feel free to suggest topics for me to write about using the Suggestions? tab to the right or use Formspring to ask me random stuff. Check Doug's FAQ first!

The Free Software Foundation has updated its pages recently and included a short article with the above title. In article (which you should really go and read) they expand upon the following 4 reasons:

  • Free software can save schools money. Even in rich countries, education is under-funded.
  • Schools should teach practices which benefit society as a whole, not feed mega-corporations.
  • Free software permits students learning how software works. The source code of Open Source software can be read (and modified) by everyone and anyone.
  • Communities are built around free software, which can lead to lessons in itself!

edte.ch certainly advocates the use of free and Open Source software in schools. If you’re interested in how we can be of help, get in touch! :-)
