Gelato: WordPress for tumblelogs?

You may have come across the excellent Tumblr, a way to ‘tumblelog’. A tumblelog, according to Wikipedia, can be defined in the following way:

A tumblelog is a variation of a blog, that favors short-form, mixed-media posts over the longer editorial posts frequently associated with blogging. Common post formats found on tumblelogs include links, photos, quotes, dialogues, and video. Unlike blogs, this format is frequently used to share the author’s creations, discoveries, or experiences without providing a commentary.

I think it’s a great way to start students blogging. Either that, or to aggregate the RSS feeds from various sources into one stream. Much as I’ve done with my blog posts, Twitter updates, Flickr photos, etc. at dougbelshaw.tumblr.com. The problem, of course, is that it’s always best to have full control over these things.

It would seem that Gelato has the potential to become the WordPress of tumblelogging. It’s open-source, has plugins and themes, and apparently can be installed in 5 minutes, just like WordPress. I’m certainly looking forward to giving it a spin. If anyone does likewise, please share your experiences in the comments section!

Update: I’ve given it a quick spin and it works a treat. The only thing that’s stopping me moving across to this platform is that this version of Gelato, unlike Tumblr, cannot import RSS feeds and automatically format them. I’m sure that will be addressed in the next version though!
